FAIRFAX, Va. - The Bucknell women's track and field team finished second out of 15 schools at the Mason Spring Invitational Saturday, hosted by George Mason. The Bison tallied 109.75 points, while Dartmouth took the team title with 119.50 points.
It was a total team effort Saturday, as 20 different athletes contributed to the Bison scoring.
"The conditions made things very tough on the athletes," says head coach Kevin Donner. "However, I was pleased with the mindset that most of our athletes brought and I believe we are a better team because of how we handled the cold and windy conditions. I believe we are set up well for next week's Bison Outdoor Classic."
Margaret Thomson took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 11:09.84, falling short to Tessa Mundell of James Madison, who finished the event in 11:09.82. Thomson's time ranks top-10 in the Bucknell record book and was fast enough to defeat last year's winner in the event (11:16.86). Lauren Hazzard finished third in the event to add to the Bison score.
Sophia Nnadi scored in two events on the day. Nnadi earned second place finishes in the shot put and hammer throw. Abigail Brundage took third, respectively, in the hammer.
Ellen Kalnins and Tara Lee also scored in the hammer throw, while Meg Sangimino, Dayna Simone and Rebecca Skovira scored in the javelin throw.
Chrissy Haney placed second in a field of 17 runners in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:03.20. Laura Papili finished fourth in the event, while Katie Sabatino took sixth to contribute to the Bison score.
Haney, along with Kafilat Oladiran, advanced past the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles, each adding to Bucknell's point total with top-eight finishes in the final heat.
Carly Reiner finished second out of 14 in the triple jump, recording a leap of 37-1. Also scoring for Bucknell in the event was Alexis Auman, who took sixth with a jump of 35-8 ½.
Allison Sharkey scored five points for the Bison, taking fifth out of 26 in the 400, while Sarah Chandler and Christine Bendzinski combined to score eight points after competing in the 800.
Also adding to the Bucknell scoring was Chloe Brown (pole vault) and Emily Fisher (discus throw).
The Bison return to action Apr. 16-17 for their first home meet of the outdoor season when they host the Bison Outdoor Classic.
