LEWISBURG, Pa. – It was a fantastic day for the Bucknell women's track and field team Saturday, as Christine Bendzinski and Kate Scott set new school records on the opening day of competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Bendzinski was the runner-up in a field of 56 in the 1,500-meter, crossing the line in 4:19.99. Her time shaves six seconds off the previous school record set by Caroline Tolli in 2013 (4:25.55) and breaks the previous facility mark set in 2012 (4:20.11). Virginia Tech's Rachel Pocratsky won the event, finishing in 4:19.82.
Scott finished second out of 36 in the 5,000 with a time of 16:38.21. Her time shatters the previous mark of 16:51.95 set by Emily Liggett in 2012 and meets the ECAC requirement.
Sarah Chandler also competed in the 1,500, taking ninth with a time of 4:28.68. Her time betters the ECAC standard and ranks fifth in the Bucknell record book.
The Bison dominated the 5,000 unseeded, taking three of the top five spots in a field of 76 runners. Deanna Godby was the runner-up in the event, while Alison Billas and Brennan Sharkey finished third and fourth, respectively.
In field events, Dayna Simone took fourth out of 33 in the javelin throw with a heave of 137-2, while Kasey Getkin finished sixth with a toss of 135-11. Both marks meet the ECAC standard.
Stephanie Easse took sixth in the discus with a throw of 144-09, which qualifies her for the ECAC Championships. Sophia Nnadi took eighth in the event in a pool of 38 participants.
“It may have been one of the best day ones ever for the Bison,” says head coach Kevin Donner. “Distance runners were on fire with some huge marks and our field athletes are getting into championship-caliber form. I could not have asked for a better day. We will try to keep this momentum going for tomorrow.”
The final day of the Bison Outdoor Classic begins with the pole vault at 11 a.m. on Sunday and concludes with the men's 4x400 relay at 5:25 p.m.
