PRINCETON, N.J. – Marta Considine stole the ball on Harvard's final possession to preserve a one-goal Bucknell lead and the Bison women's water polo team hung on for a 7-6 victory over the No. 18 Crimson Saturday evening at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. It was Bucknell's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Bison played No. 6 Michigan (24-6, 5-0 CWPA) earlier in the day and lost to the Wolverines by a 16-4 margin.
In the nightcap, Bucknell (15-13, 3-2 CWPA) scored four consecutive goals in the first half to open a 4-1 edge. However, Harvard (21-8, 2-4 CWPA) reeled off four straight goals of its own to go on top 5-4. The Bison went right back on top with three consecutive goals by Colleen Barron (1) and Eleanor Marrs (2). Marrs' two goals came in the fourth quarter and staked Bucknell to a late 7-5 advantage.
Harvard's Melissa Balding made the score 7-6 with her second goal of the game, but the Bison held on for the win.
Barron and Marrs led the Bucknell offense with two goals apiece, while Manuela Herrera came up big in goal with a season-high 10 saves.
Hannah Sunday drew five ejections and Emily Konishi had one goal and two assists to contribute to the victory.
Marrs, who also had an assist in the first game of the day, now has 110 points this year, good for fourth on the program's single-season list. Her 53 assists place her in a tie for fifth on that ledger.
In the day's first game, Michigan jumped out to a 9-2 halftime lead. Shyla Lintz, Eliza Romeyn, Konishi and Katherine DeRuff scored goals for the Bison.
Bucknell, which had lost its first 13 games this season against ranked opponents, will play two more ranked foes Sunday when it takes on No. 13 Indiana (11:40 a.m.) and No. 15 Princeton (5 p.m.).
