Cioffi Breaks Career Singles Record, Women's Tennis Falls at Army West Point
4/10/2016 7:16:00 PM | Women's Tennis
WEST POINT, N.Y. –Maria Cioffi became the program's all-time leader in singles wins with a three-set victory, but the Bucknell women's tennis team dropped its Patriot League match at Army West Point 5-2 on Sunday. It was the first league loss of the season for the Bison, who return to Lewisburg at 11-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Cioffi fell 6-4 in the first set while playing senior Carolyn Pitman at No. 1 singles. The Bucknell senior battled back with 6-4, 10-7 victories in the final two sets to record the win against the returning First Team All-Patriot League selection. Cioffi also defeated Pitman last season and was the only player in the conference to go undefeated at No. 1 singles against conference opponents.
With Sunday's win, Cioffi upped her career singles mark to 88-33, passing Lauren Lucido for the top spot in the record book. Lucido went 87-36 during her career from 2007-11.
Cioffi improved to 23-4 during the 2015-16 season, which includes a 14-2 record during the spring campaign. She has won 13 straight matches and is a perfect 5-0 against Patriot League opponents.
Teaming with junior Michele Urbinati, Cioffi was also on the winning side of her match at No. 1 doubles. The duo topped Eva Sung and Rugile Valuniate 6-4.
Bucknell freshman Lauren Fishbein posted a big win at No. 3 singles, beating Genevieve McCormick 6-4, 6-4. Entering the match, McCormick was 10-7 during the spring while playing anywhere from No. 1 to No. 4 singles.
“Army was tough as always,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “We were just a little too tight with our execution today, but every match is a learning experience. We just need to take what we can from this match and learn from it.”
The Bison return home to play a non-conference match with La Salle on Tuesday. The contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
