LEWISBURG, Pa. -- After coming out of the locker room with a slim 5-4 lead, Navy scored eight straight times in the second half en route to a 13-6 win over Bucknell in Patriot League men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Quinn Collison scored twice for the Bison, who fell to 3-2 overall, 0-2 in the Patriot League, and saw their five-game winning streak over Navy come to an end.
Jack Ray and Casey Rees scored four goals each for Navy (3-2, 1-1 PL), while Greyson Torain and Patrick Keena both tallied three assists. Sean Doyle recorded a goal and two assists, and Will Sands and Tommy O'Connor both added a goal and an assist for the Bison.
Bucknell trailed 2-1 early in the second quarter before taking its first lead of the day on an extra-man goal from Doyle and then a Collison finish off a nice feed from Doyle. The two goals game just 65 seconds apart, but then Navy tied it when Ray's sharp-angle shot ricocheted off the body of goalie Christian Klipstein into the cage.
T.J. Hanzsche, who also had a hat trick for the Midshipmen, scored twice in succession to put the visitors up 5-3, but the Bison got one back with 1:10 left in the half when Kyle Shanahan ducked under a defender for a nice goal.
It was all Navy in the second half, however. The Mids outscored Bucknell 5-0 in the third quarter and then scored the first three in the fourth to take a commanding 13-4 lead. Navy's eight second-half goals came on 15 shots against three different Bison goalies.
Bucknell entered the game ranked 14th nationally in faceoff percentage (.614), but the Mids garnered a big possession advantage in this one by claiming 17 of the 23 draws, including 9 of 12 in the second half.
Navy outshot Bucknell 32-27 and led 31-24 in ground balls. John Connors finished with 12 saves for Navy, while Klipstein had six in 45:45 for the Bison. Brac McKee and Joey Altemus (one save) also saw action in relief.
This was Navy's first win over Bucknell since an 8-7 overtime verdict in 2010. The all-time series is now tied at eight wins apiece.
Next up for the Bison is a road conference game at Holy Cross next Saturday at 1 p.m.
