LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell freshman pitcher Jack Grabek (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) was named the Patriot League Baseball Rookie of the Week on Monday, the league office announced. The lefty pitched 8.1 shutout innings to lead the Bison to a 5-0 win vs. Yale in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
Grabek was nearly unhittable against the Bulldogs, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out a season-high six. He pitched to the minimum number of hitters through seven innings and had two of the singles against him erased on caught stealings as he earned his first career victory. Fellow freshman Jeff Gottesman got the final two outs to preserve Bucknell's first shutout of the season.
Grabek has made seven appearances on the mound this year with the last three being starting assignments. He started last Tuesday at Binghamton and yielded three hits and three runs in 4.0 innings of work.
Grabek's first career start came March 16 in Florida against Dartmouth. He pitched 6.0 innings and struck out four while allowing just three hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. Grabek departed with the contest tied 2-2.
Ranked third on the team with a 2.29 ERA this season, Grabek has allowed one or fewer earned runs in six of his seven appearances this season. He has 15 strikeouts in 19.2 innings and opponents are hitting just .159 against him.
Grabek is the second Bison to be named Patriot League Rookie of the Week this season, following Gottesman, who was recognized Feb. 22 after his performance on the opening weekend of the campaign at James Madison.
Bucknell, which is 9-15 this year, will play a 3 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday before opening Patriot League play this weekend at home against Lehigh.
