LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Jack Grabek pitched 8.1 scoreless innings and fellow rookie Jeff Gottesman got the final two outs to combine on Bucknell's first shutout of the year as the Bison baseball team defeated Yale 5-0 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Depew Field. The Bulldogs claimed game one by a 10-0 score behind a one-hitter from pitcher Scott Politz.
Grabek (1-1) was the story of game two as he pitched to the minimum number of hitters through seven innings thanks to two singles that were erased on caught stealings. He struck out six and his only walk of the game came in the eighth inning. Grabek exited the game one out into the ninth to a round of applause from the Bison fans in attendance. Gottesman then retired the only two hitters he faced to end the game.
Spencer Stokes and Jon Mayer had RBI singles in the first inning and Mike Korchak hit his team-high third home run of the year in the sixth. Joe Ogren also knocked in a run with a ground out in the third and Brett Smith scored on a wild pitch following a leadoff triple in the seventh.
Danny Rafferty and Stokes were both 2-for-4 in the contest to account for four of Bucknell's 10 hits.
Mason Kukowski (0-4) scattered those 10 hits over 7.0 innings for Yale. He gave up five runs and struck out three while walking just one. Benny Wanger, who was 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Bulldogs.
Game one featured a dominating performance by Politz (2-2), who allowed just a single up the middle by Sam Clark in the fifth inning. He also walked Rafferty in the fourth, but he was later erased on a double play. Politz struck out five in the winning effort.
Bucknell used five pitchers in game one and four of them saw action during Yale's nine-run sixth inning. The Bulldogs sent 14 hitters to the plate with Andrew Herrera's grand slam being the big blow in the frame. Yale had seven hits and four walks in the inning.
Starter Dan Keller (0-3) suffered the loss for the Bison, but pitched well. He allowed six hits and three runs in 5.0 innings.
Bucknell and Yale ended up splitting their four-game weekend series.
The Bison will play at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday before opening Patriot League play next weekend at home against Lehigh.
