PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Peter Sitaris had a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to give Saint Joseph's a 6-5 lead and the Hawks stranded Bucknell's potential game-tying run at second base in the top of the ninth to win by that 6-5 score Wednesday afternoon at Smithson Field.
Saint Joseph's, which defeated Patriot League foe Lafayette on Tuesday, improved to 11-10, while the Bison fell to 9-16.
Brett Smith was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI for Bucknell. Smith hit his first career home run in the third inning. He also tripled and scored in the fifth and singled and scored in the seventh as he finished a double shy of the cycle.
A two-out two-run double by Joe Ogren in the seventh staked the Bison to a late 5-4 advantage. He has now driven in a team-high 15 runs this season.
With Patriot League play on the horizon this weekend, Bucknell used eight different pitchers for an inning apiece. Connor Van Hoose got the start, while Mike Stephens (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
The Hawks used five different pitchers with reliever Nick Roth (1-0) earning the win for pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. Roth entered the game after Ogren's double and retired all four hitters he faced. Ryan Kelly earned his second save of the year for pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Luke Johnson was 2-for-4 with one run scored for Bucknell, which equaled Saint Joseph's with eight hits in the contest.
The Bison will open Patriot League play this weekend when they host Lehigh in a four-game series at Depew Field. First pitch both Saturday and Sunday is slated for noon. All four games will have an audio broadcast on 90.5 WVBU FM and BucknellBison.com.
