EMMITSBURG, Md. – Bucknell's men's tennis match at Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday came down to the final singles contest, and Ben Gerber came through in the clutch with a victory in straight sets to give the Bison the 4-3 win. Gerber's match was never in doubt as he rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Brandon Wortkotter at the No. 5 spot.
Bucknell, which played its 16th straight match away from its home courts, evened its record at 8-8. Mount St. Mary's, a much improved team from the one the Bison beat 6-1 last season, fell to 7-6. The Mountaineers have lost 4-3 to three Patriot League opponents, including Navy and Lehigh.
Despite a win by sophomore Daniel Wright and Gerber at No. 3, Bucknell was down 1-0 after doubles, but senior captain Nick Bybel quickly knotted the score with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. He improved to 9-3 with his fifth straight victory.
The Bison followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win by Wright at No. 2 singles to take a 2-1 lead. The teams traded points from there, with freshman Andrei Vitiuc winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No.4, and Gerber recording the final team point.
Vitiuc upped his dual record to 8-6. Six of those matches have gone three sets, with the rookie posting wins in four of them.
Bucknell improved to 18-2 in the all-time series with Mount St. Mary's.
The Bison are back in action this weekend as they travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia for a match with James Madison at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
