LEWISBURG, Pa. – After a 2-1 weekend to open the season, the Bucknell men's tennis team is back in action Sunday as it travels to Williamsville, New York to take on Niagara. The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Village Glen Tennis & Fitness Club.
Sunday's match will be the third in New York this season for the Bison. They posted a shutout win over Le Moyne to open the year and fell to Binghamton. They also have a shutout win over La Salle in their only match played outside of New York.
Bucknell's top four players all posted two wins on the first weekend of competition, including freshman Andrei Vitiuc, who went a perfect 2-0 at the No. 4 spot. Sophomore Daniel Wright (No. 1), sophomore Max Kane (No. 2) and junior Bryan Adams (No. 3) all went 2-1.
That group will all bump down a spot on Sunday as senior Nick Bybel makes his spring debut. Bybel is ranked 18th in the Atlantic Region and is the school's all-time leader in singles wins and combined wins.
Bucknell and Niagara will play for the first time since 2013. The Bison won that match by a slim 4-3 score. Bybel was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles as a freshman.
Niagara, which is scheduled to play Duquesne on Saturday, is 0-2 on the season. The Purple Eagles were shut out by Saint Francis (Pa.) and St. Bonaventure. They were picked to finish fifth in the MAAC.
Up next after the match against Niagara is a tough test for Bucknell as it travels to play at Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 13. The Nittany Lions are ranked 50th in the nation and are 4-0 on the season.
