YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Sophomore Nicholas Lombardo won the long jump event to lead the Bucknell men's track and field team on the first day of competition at the Youngstown State National Invite on Friday.
Lombardo was the best in a field of 34 jumpers, winning the event with a leap of 23-1 ¼. It is the second-straight season that the sophomore has won the long jump crown at the meet.
Sophomore David Frering finished as the runner-up in a field of 19 runners in the 1,000m dash, crossing the finish line in 2:30.00.
Junior Jacob Ashkettle (1:05.56) and freshman Scott Gulizio (1:06.08) each cracked the top-five in the 500m dash.
In the 5000m run, junior Luke Giugliano and senior Peter Murray each earned top-five finishes in the event, placing third and fourth, respectively, in a field of 42 runners.
Senior Olu Shoyoye took fifth out of 30 in the weight throw with a heave of 53-7 ¾. Senior Mark Stafurik placed sixth in the event with a toss of 53-2 ¾ to round out the top-10 finishes.
"I was very happy with the 5000 with a few lifetime bests," says head coach Kevin Donner. "Lombardo winning the long jump was nice and our weight throwers looked solid. We had some pretty good races in the 500 meter as well."
Competition at the Youngstown State National Invite picks back up on Saturday at 10 a.m. with field events. A group of student-athletes will also be competing at Susquehanna University in the Crusader Challenge.
