LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the second straight week, the Bucknell softball team won two Corvias Patriot League Weekly Awards. Sophomore Meghan Kovac earned her second consecutive Player of the Week accolade, while also being named the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week. Senior Cindy Cherness was voted the Pitcher of the Week for the first time.
Kovac went 14-for-21 with five doubles and six RBIs while leading Bucknell to a 4-1 record at UNCW's Seahawk Softball Classic, including wins in each of the final four games. She had multiple hits in every game and at least one double in each of the past four games. The weekend was highlighted with four of the Bison's 17 hits in a 12-4 win over UNCW.
Kovac has opened the season with a 10-game hitting streak and ranks second in the nation with a .676 batting average. She is 25-for-37 with seven doubles, one home run and 11 RBIs. She has added a pair of walks to give her an on-base percentage of .692.
Cherness pitched six hitless innings over two appearances in Wilmington, including a five-inning no-hitter in an 8-0 win over N.C. Central. She struck out six batters and walked just one in that outing, which came just one day after she struck out one and walked one in a scoreless inning of relief in another 8-0 win over N.C. Central.
In three appearances this season, Cherness is 1-0 with a 1.68 ERA. She has given up just three hits in 8.1 innings, while striking out 10 batters and walking five.
The Bison are 6-4 on the season and are riding a four-game winning streak. They will put that streak on the line when they play four games at Delaware's Blue Hen Blast on Saturday and Sunday.
