
Women's Water Polo Falls to No. 20 Wagner, 10-6

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's water polo team opened the final day of its own invitational with its third game this season against No. 20 Wagner and lost to the Seahawks by a 10-6 score at Kinney Natatorium. The 25th-ranked Bison outscored Wagner 6-3 in the second and fourth quarters, but were held scoreless in the first and third periods.
Bucknell (6-5) saw its five-game winning streak snapped with the loss. Wagner (10-7) improved to 3-0 this weekend and won for the seventh time in its last eight outings.
Eleanor Marrs led the Bison with three goals, all on penalty shots. Bucknell drew 10 ejections in the game, but converted just 2 of 6 six-on-five opportunities. Wagner was 1-for-2 in similar situations, although the Bison were not whistled for an ejection until late in the fourth quarter.
Marrs also had two assists in the game, bringing her career tally to 98, tying her for ninth place in program history with Shana Palencia.
Wagner, which was led by four goals from Megan Rodriguez, scored three goals in the first quarter and held the Bison scoreless until midway through the second period. Tegan Stanbach finally got Bucknell on the board with 3:59 to play before halftime. Hannah Sunday netted a six-on-five goal and Marrs converted the first of her penalty shots to bring the Bison to within 4-3 at halftime.
Wagner outscored Bucknell 4-0 in the third quarter and tallied the first five goals of the second half before the Bison scored three straight times in the fourth quarter on two penalty shots and a six-on-five goal by Colleen Barron.
Haley Derrod was strong in goal for Bucknell, stopping nine shots, all in the first three quarters of play. She now has 27 saves in her four starts this season, including 21 in her last two appearances this weekend.
This is the third weekend of the regular season for the Bison and they have faced the Seahawks each time. Nationally ranked Wagner has won all three games by scores of 11-9, 14-6 and 10-6.
Bucknell will wrap up the Bison Invitational with a 2 p.m. game Sunday against VMI. The contest can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.
