ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Eleanor Marrs equaled her career highs for goals (4) and points (8) and led the Bucknell women's water polo team to a 15-5 victory over George Washington Saturday in the opening game of the Wolverine Invitational at Michigan's Canham Natatorium. The Bison faced No. 21 Long Beach State later in the day and built a 4-1 lead, but lost to the 49ers by a tight 8-6 score to go 1-1 on the day.
Bucknell (8-6) is 7-2 in its last nine games and is a perfect 8-0 this year against unranked opponents.
Marrs and fellow senior captain Hannah Sunday combined to tally eight of the Bison's 15 goals against George Washington (3-4). Shyla Lintz chipped in three goals and Tegan Stanbach totaled one goal and two assists in the win. Marrs' four assists were a season high.
Bucknell built a 7-1 halftime lead over the Colonials and led 11-1 entering the final period. It marked the second straight weekend the Bison defeated George Washington as Bucknell won by a 13-7 decision last weekend at the Bison Invitational.
The Bison defense was strong against the Colonials, totaling 26 steals, one shy of a season high. Lintz led the way with a season-high six steals.
Manuela Herrera posted seven saves in goal for Bucknell.
In the nightcap against Long Beach State (6-7), the Bison scored five six-on-five goals and led 4-1 in the final minute of the first half. However, the 49ers limited Bucknell to just two goals in the second half and scored five of their own in the third quarter.
Six different Bison scored a single goal apiece. Marrs added two assists to her goal, giving her 11 points on the day. She now has a team-high 61 points this season.
