NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- Straight-set singles victories from freshmen Lauren Fishbein and Mishi Papich along with senior Stephanie Pino at the 3, 4 and 5 spots in the lineup keyed a 5-2 victory for the Bucknell women's tennis team at Niagara on Saturday. The Bison won their second straight match to improve to 2-1 in spring duals, and they turned the tables on Niagara after a 6-1 loss to the Purple Eagles a year ago.
Bucknell took a 1-0 lead in the match by claiming the doubles point. The No. 1 pairing of Maria Cioffi and Michele Urbinati improved to 6-0 in 2015-16 with a 7-5 verdict over Haley Hollis and Stella Peisakhova. At No. 2 doubles, Fishbein and Lisa Jouravleva defeated Sharlee Deshmukh and Shannon Wong, 6-4.
Niagara (3-5) posted victories at 1 and 2 singles, but the Bison were dominant lower in the lineup. Most impressive was Pino, who blanked Jasmin Vargas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
Fishbein improved to 3-0 in duals and 7-1 overall this season with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Wong at No. 3. Papich topped Deshmukh 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 to get to 5-2 on the season. Madeline Melch won by default at No. 6 singles to round out the scoring.
"It's good to get the win, always," said head coach Rebecca Helt. "We still have a lot of work to do, but we know that every time we take the court it will get better. I'm really pleased with our freshmen and the way they are impacting our lineup. We have a lot of great depth to work with."
Bucknell will remain in Upstate New York to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
