YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Bucknell women's tennis team took two of three doubles matches to earn the first point and added one singles win, but fell 5-2 to Youngstown State on Friday night. It was the first match of the season for the Bison, who fell to 0-1, while the Penguins improved to 2-7.
“We came out playing aggressive in doubles today,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “We played tight in singles but, I think coming off our fast rubber practice surface and with this being our first match, that's to be expected. We have a lot of talent and depth. It will come down to who can go out there and play without fear.”
Maria Cioffi and Michele Urbinati picked up where they left off this spring when they posted a 3-0 record, winning 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The pair posted the win over Dominika Lackova, a two-time First Team All-Horizon selection, and Julianna Heino.
Lauren Fishbein and Lisa Jouravleva were 6-3 winners at No. 2 doubles, topping Annina Brendel and Noelly Longi Nsimba. Brendel earned Second Team All-Horizon League recognition last season.
Fishbein also recorded the lone singles victory of the match for the Bison, rolling to a 6-3, 6-3 win on court three. The win came over Sofia Macias, who won 10 of her final 13 matches last season, including two while helping the Penguins win the Horizon League Tournament title.
The Bison return to action with a match against Saint Francis on Saturday at 3 p.m. The match will be played at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
