LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell suffered its third straight one-goal loss in a 2-1 defeat to No. 15 Boston University in a Patriot League field hockey game Saturday at Graham Field. The Bison dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference, but the past three losses have come against teams that appear in the most recent edition of the national rankings.
Bucknell's seven losses have come against teams that are a combined 44 games over .500 with a record of 64-20. The past four opponents are a combined 36-11.
Boston University, which was picked in the preseason to win its third straight Patriot League title, improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Amanda Cassera scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Hester van der Laan, the Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, to put Boston up 1-0 at the 20:15 mark of the first half. The Terriers went up 2-0 midway through the second half with an unassisted goal by Allie Renzi, her fifth of the season.
Renzi's goal came after a great save by Bucknell goalie Emily Finn. She made a stop on a blast from the top of the circle on a penalty corner, but Renzi was there for the rebound and easy putback.
Sophomore Nicole Rupnik gave the Bison some hope with a goal in the 63rd minute. The score, which came after a steal and a breakaway, was her sixth of the season and third in the past two games. The three goals have come against the fourth- and 15th-ranked teams in the nation.
Finn finished with four saves, while Boston goalie Cammy Jensen stopped one of the two shots she faced.
Bucknell returns to action with a non-conference game against Yale at noon on Sunday. The Bulldogs are 4-6 after suffering a 2-1 loss to Cornell on Saturday.
The Bison's next league game is at Holy Cross on Saturday, Oct. 15. It will be a key game for both teams as they try to strengthen their chances of securing a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.
