LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Sophomores Charlie McFarland and Chadd Cummings were individual event winners on Saturday as the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team kicked off its 2016-17 campaign with a non-scored dual meet against UMBC, the two-time defending champion in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association, at Kinney Natatorium.
Cummings was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 57.82, and he was also runner-up in the 200 breast in 2:07.56. McFarland won the 100 individual medley -- one of several non-traditional events contested in this early season meet -- in a time of 55.12.
Senior Louis Behnen had a good day, finishing second in two individual events and a relay. He fell just a fingertip short in the 200 freestyle, an event in which he holds the Bucknell record. Behnen's time of 1:43.10 was a mere hundredth of a second behind UMBC's Nikola Trajkovic (1:43.09). Freshmen Michael Park and Ray Warner made it a 2-3-4 finish for the Bison in that event.
Behnen was also second in the 400 IM in 4:07.06.
In the 400 free relay, the Bison sent out the same foursome that shattered the school record at last season's Patriot League Championships. Jack Robinson, Behnen, Chris Devlin and McFarland took second in 3:11.70.
The Bison also grabbed a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:35.45) behind Robinson, Cummings, sophomore James Elmendorf and freshman Matt McGoey.
Other second-place finishes for Bucknell came from McGoey in the 200 IM (1:57.10) and Devlin in both the 100 fly (52.92) and 50 backstroke (24.22).
The Bison are back in action on Oct. 15 against Boston University at Kinney Natatorium. That meet will be part of Bucknell's 60th Anniversary celebration weekend.
