LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Nicholas Lombardo tied a school-record in the high jump on Saturday as the Bison men competed in the Penn State Relays. Lombardo finished second out of 20 athletes in the event with a leap of 6-10 ¾, tying the school-record set by Ted Lewis in 1982. His performance also qualified him for the IC4A Indoor Championships.
Freshman Matthew Fay and sophomore Maxwell Prizant gave Bucknell two top-five finishes in the pole vault. Fay was runner-up with a vault of 14-9, while Prizant took fifth with a 14-3 ¼ effort.
The 4x1 mile relay team of junior Ross Pirnie, sophomore Zachary Williams and seniors Andrew and John Kirna placed second, finishing with a time of 17:44.24.
Junior Joseph Breen (shot put) took fourth in a field of 23 throwers, with a heave of 52-4 ¾. Senior Mark Stafurik came in eighth to round out the top-10 finishes for the Bison.
Bucknell also notched a pair of top-10 finishes in the weight throw. Senior Olu Shoyoye finished seventh with a toss of 52-10 ¼, while Stafurik placed ninth with a throw of 49-9 ¼.
Senior John Westwood (3000m), freshman Reggie Harris (triple jump) along with the 4x400 relay team of seniors Daniel Gevirtz, Griffin Robertson, Anthony and freshman Scott Gulizio, each placed fifth in their respective events.
“Overall, we had some ups and downs today,” says head coach Kevin Donner. “Because of the tough week of camp and the layoff, we were not as sharp as we will be in a couple of weeks. Lombardo had a huge day in the high jump and I felt some of our throwers opened up well.”
Bucknell will have a two-week before it returns to action with another home meet, the Gulden Invitation on Saturday, Jan. 23.
