HAMPTON, Va. – Victor Lopez and Rustin Barrick both posted perfect 3-0 marks and Joe Stolfi recorded a pair of wins by pin in Bucknell's three matches on the opening day of the Virginia Duals Friday. As a team, the Bison posted a 1-2 record on the day, defeating The Citadel 32-9 in their opening match before falling to No. 5 Virginia Tech 24-6 and Kent State 22-17.
Bucknell (3-3) will wrestle one more time at the Virginia Duals and that will be at 10 a.m. Saturday vs. Rider (4-6).
The Virginia Duals features 12 teams divided into four three-team pools. Bucknell's pool opponents were The Citadel and Virginia Tech. With a 1-1 record in those two matches, the Bison advanced on to the Silver Round against Kent State, which was 1-1 in its pool. Like Bucknell, Rider went 1-2 Friday as it lost to nationally ranked Old Dominion in its Silver Round match.
Bucknell breezed through its opening match of the day against The Citadel (3-2) as it won eight of the 10 bouts. The Bison posted five bonus-point victories with all five coming from grapplers 149 pounds or more. Lopez (149), D.J. Hollingshead (165) and Barrick (174) won by major decision, while Tom Sleigh (184) posted a 19-2 tech fall and Stolfi pinned his opponent. Bucknell's closes win was a five-point decision by Tyler Smith at 141.
The Bison then faced nationally ranked Virginia Tech (6-1) and Lopez and Barrick registered the only victories for Bucknell. Lopez posted a 7-1 decision over Chad Saunders, while Barrick won by a 6-3 decision over Dave Bergida. The Hokies' lineup featured six nationally ranked wrestlers, including 2014 All-American Joey Dance, who defeated No. 11 Paul Petrov 3-1 at 125 pounds, and 2015 All-American Ty Walz, who posted a 5-3 decision vs. Stolfi at 285. Both Dance and Walz are ranked third nationally by Intermat.
The final match of the day was the closest for Bucknell. The difference in the match were bonus-point victories as Kent State (7-3) registered three – including two for six points – to one for the Bison. Stolfi's pin of Stephen Suglio that capped the match was his fifth of the year in just seven bouts. He is now up to a program-record 57 in his career.
Lopez and Barrick finished their perfect days with wins by decision. Lopez won by seven points, while Barrick was victorious by a 6-1 margin. Lopez's three wins Friday came by a total of 24 points, while Barrick outscored his opponents 24-4. Petrov and Sleigh recorded Bucknell's other victories against the Golden Flashes.
Saturday's match against Rider will conclude the Virginia Duals for the Bison, who will open a five-match homestand next Friday, Jan. 15, when they host Oklahoma in Sojka Pavilion.
