HAMPTON, Va. – Victor Lopez and Rustin Barrick completed perfect 4-0 tournaments, Joe Stolfi tied Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Tom Marchetti on the program's all-time wins list and the Bison recorded four bonus-point victories as the Bucknell wrestling team wrapped up the Virginia Duals with a 28-13 victory over Rider Saturday morning. The Bison were 2-2 at the two-day event and are now 4-3 this season, while the Broncs fell to 3-6 after a 1-3 weekend.
Both Lopez and Barrick were 3-0 during Bucknell's three duals on Friday and both ended the weekend with convincing wins against Rider. Lopez posted a 13-0 shutout of Jimmy Morris at 149 pounds, while Barrick registered a 16-1 tech fall vs. Wayne Stinson at 174 pounds. Lopez is now 8-1 in his last nine bouts and outscored his four Virginia Duals opponents by a 50-13 margin. Barrick is 9-1 in his last 10 bouts and held a 40-5 advantage against his four opponents at the Virginia Duals.
The match was already decided when Stolfi took to the mat at 285 pounds, but he ended on a high note with a 7-1 victory over Greg Velasco. It was the 106th victory of Stolfi's career, tying him with Marchetti for sixth on the program's all-time list. Stolfi is 7-1 this year – including 3-1 at the Virginia Duals – with five wins by fall.
Paul Petrov, who is ranked 11th nationally at 125 pounds, got the match started with a pin to give him a team-high 19 wins this season, a figure Lopez later matched. Lopez's win gave the Bison the lead for good as Bucknell posted five consecutive victories in the middle weights. Zach Kelly followed Lopez with an overtime decision, while Robert Schlitt posted an 11-0 major at 165 pounds. Barrick followed with a win at 174 and Tom Sleigh won for the eighth time in nine bouts with a 5-4 decision at 184.
This is the second consecutive year the Bison have posted a 2-2 record at the Virginia Duals. Last year Bucknell also capped the tournament with a win vs. Rider, which was ranked 17th nationally at the time.
The Bison will return to action Friday, Jan. 15, when they host No. 12 Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in Sojka Pavilion. There is no admission charge for the match, which will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network. It will be the first of five consecutive home duals for Bucknell.
