LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior Chris Hass put together two of the best back-to-back performances in Bucknell basketball history last week, capped by an incredible 40-point effort at Army West Point, and on Monday he received a number of honors recognizing his outstanding play. Hass was named Lids Team Sports Patriot League Player of the Week, 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week, CollegeInsider.com Lou Henson Player of the Week, Mid-Major Madness Player of the Week, College Sports Madness Player of the Week and Corvias ECAC Player of the Week.
Hass' week began last Wednesday with a 22-point, 5-assist, 5-steal performance in Bucknell's 88-58 rout of Navy in the Patriot League opener. He was 8-for-12 from the field, 3-for-5 from 3-point range and 3-for-3 from the foul line, and his assist and steal totals were both career highs.
He trumped that stat line with a game for the ages on Saturday at West Point. His career-high 40-point outburst included a school-record 32 points – on perfect 11-for-11 shooting from the field – in the first half. Hass scored 32 of the team's 37 points in the opening 20 minutes, and then he scored six points in the final 1:15 to help the Bison salt away an 84-76 victory over the 10-3 Black Knights.
Hass' 40 points came on 13-for-19 shooting (7-for-11 from the arc) and 10-for-12 from the foul line. It was the seventh 40-point game in school history, and the first since Kevin Bettencourt racked up 42 at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 6, 2003. Hass had the first 40-point effort in a Patriot League intraconference game since Navy's Chris Harris scored 40 against Lehigh on Feb. 10, 2010. It was also the first 40-point game for a Patriot League player since Lehigh's C.J. McCollum scored 42 vs. Kent State on Nov. 26, 2010.
The previous Bucknell record for points in a half was 27, set by Joe Steiner against La Salle in 1962 and Chris Simpson against Holy Cross in 1994. He also broke the Christ Arena record for points scored by an Army opponent. Rob Feaster of Holy Cross held the previous mark with 37, which he did twice in the early 1990s.
Hass, who earned his fourth career Patriot League Player of the Week award, moved past Ted Aceto and Greg Leggett into 26th place on Bucknell's all-time scoring list with 1,146 points. He is one point behind Charles Lee for the No. 25 spot.
In the two games last week, Hass was 21-for-31 (.677) from the field, 7-for-11 (.636) from 3-point range and 13-for-15 (.867) from the foul line. He tallied 62 points in just 57 minutes of action.
Not to be lost among Hass' record-setting week is that Bucknell has gotten off to a 2-0 start in Patriot League play, with the wins coming over the two teams that came in with the best non-conference records.
The Bison will play their next two games at home. American visits Sojka Pavilion on Wednesday at 7 p.m., followed by Holy Cross on Saturday at 2 p.m.
