LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball season begins next month and fourth-year Bison head coach Scott Heather recently named the squad's team captains for the 2016 campaign. Seniors Andrew Andreychik (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), Dan Keller (Short Hills, N.J./Pingry), Joe Ogren (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and Tommy Pennington (Mequon, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) will serve as team captains for the Bison, who are looking to return to the Patriot League postseason for the third time in the last four years.
“I am excited for these four guys and the opportunity we have to provide quality leadership for the team,” said Heather, who has guided Bucknell to back-to-back 20-win seasons. “They all have different styles of leadership that balance each other out and have certainly established themselves as leaders heading into the season.”
Andreychik in 2016 will be a member of the Bucknell starting rotation for a fourth consecutive year. The 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year is tied for the program record with five career shutouts, ranks sixth in school history in fewest walks per nine innings (2.24) and is ninth on the all-time ERA list (3.41).
Andreychik is coming off a season in which he was 4-5 with a 2.44 ERA in nine appearances. The right-hander ranked fourth in the Patriot League in ERA and started Sunday game one in all five Patriot League series. Andreychik's ERA was a stellar 1.95 during Patriot League play.
Keller is also a right-handed pitcher. After missing his sophomore season due to injury, Keller appeared in seven games on the mound, including three starts, last spring. The three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll Member logged 19 innings and allowed just 16 hits while striking out 15 last year.
Ogren is a two-time All-Patriot League and Academic All-Patriot League selection who owns a .313 career batting average. The second baseman has started 138 career games and has 33 doubles, seven home runs and 75 RBIs over his first three seasons as a Bison. Ogren hit a team-best .357 last year to rank third in the Patriot League.
Ogren was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP in 2014 after hitting 6-for-14 with six runs scored, six RBIs and a .600 on-base percentage in helping Bucknell to its sixth conference tournament crown and an NCAA berth.
Pennington is an outfielder who been a significant contributor throughout his career. Last year, he started 13 games and was one of the top pinch runners on the team, going 3-for-3 on stolen bases. Pennington scored a career-high nine runs and drove in three others. Seven of his runs scored came during Patriot League play.
Bucknell opens the 2016 campaign Feb. 19-21 with a four-game series at James Madison. The Bison are coming off a season in which they posted a 24-22 record and were one of just two Patriot League teams to finish with a winning mark.
