Following a tough week of finals, the Bucknell women's swimming and diving teams began phase one of winter-break training before the holidays. The first annual Blue vs. Orange inter squad meet capped off six days of hard work and the beginning half of training camp. The Orange team prevailed, but there is no orange without the blue at Bucknell and teammates cheered each other on without regard for sides. It was fun racing in such a supportive, low-stress setting.
After the holidays and training at home, the team began the New Year with more intense training in and out of the pool. That set us up for our first dual meets since mid-November with back-to-back meets against Army and Colgate on January 9th and 10th. It's always exciting being on the road with the team and competing in new environments. Following a tough loss to Army for both the men's and women's teams, we were able to rebound on Sunday with wins on both sides. With Patriot League Championships right around the corner, the weekend provided some quality swimming within the league and offered incentive to focus our energy on working hard over the next two months.
Outside of the pool we used our free time with no classes to support local communities in central PA. On January 8th, we served the food bank at the First Baptist Church in Lewisburg, providing us with a unique opportunity to meet and support members of the Lewisburg area. On January 13th, the team visited the Mt. Caramel area age-group swimming program and taught a swim clinic. For an hour and a half, we worked on stroke technique, giving a lot of individualized instruction to a program that has only two coaches for one hundred swimmers. It was a great experience. I felt that as a team, we made a positive impact on these young swimmers in a very short time.
We closed out the home schedule with Senior Day against Wagner (women) and Columbia (men) last weekend, and will wrap up the regular season schedule at Lehigh this weekend. We look forward to carrying positive momentum into the championship season. We've set our goals high and are looking to finish out the season strong at Patriots and ECACs!
