LEWISBURG, Pa. – Melissa Parks and Maria Cioffi wrapped up a successful opening weekend for women's tennis by winning the title in the Flight B doubles bracket at the Bucknell Quad Tournament. The three-day event concluded on Sunday at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
Parks and Cioffi won the championship with an 8-5 win over Concordia's Linda Eliasson and Stefanie Canals in the finals. They had advanced to the championship round with an easy 8-0 win over Colgate's Nicole Szczech and Stephanie Fuentes in the semifinals on Saturday.
Cioffi topped Eliasson and Canals to win a title at the season-opening event for the second consecutive season. She and Stephanie Pino beat the duo in the finals last season.
Parks also had a good run in the Flight B singles bracket. After losing her opening match, she responded with three straight wins to take the consolation bracket. She finished the weekend with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Colgate's Katie Grant.
Lisa Jouravleva, Cioffi, Mishi Papich and Danielle Gannon all had solid showings in singles play for the Bison. All four advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets before being eliminated.
The Bison are back in action next weekend as they travel to play at the Saint Joseph's Invitational on Sept. 11-13.
