LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Max McDonald added two more wins Sunday to win the Flight C bracket of the Bucknell Quad Tournament. The Bison also received a first-place finish from sophomores Ben Gerber and Daniel Wright in Flight A doubles, as the three day tournament wrapped up at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
McDonald, who won his first two career matches on Saturday, had his toughest match of the tournament in the semifinals on Sunday. He dropped the first set 6-2 to Colgate's Tom Haile, but bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second set and a 10-6 victory in the third set super tiebreak. He went on to defeat Peter Salomon from Mount St. Mary's 6-3, 7-6 to win the tournament crown.
Gerber and Wright opened the final day of competition with an 8-6 win over Concordia's Jui Mao and Ofir Ginat in the semifinals. That was enough to win the title as they were deemed the winners by default in the finals. Gerber won a doubles championship at the season-opening event for the second straight year. Last season he teamed with Octavio Canibe to win Flight B.
Wright and Gerber both advanced to the finals in their respective singles brackets but came up one win short. Wright won a three-set match over Concordia's Lorenzo Montegiorgi in the Flight A semifinals before falling to Mao in straight sets. Competing in Flight B, Gerber won easily over Loyola's Blest Jones in the semis, but dropped a tough three-set match to Concordia's Rafa Ferreira in the finals.
Bucknell will have a two week break before its next competition. The Bison will play in the Ivy Plus One at Princeton on Sept. 18-20.
