LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team dominated singles play on the first day of competition at the Bucknell Quad Tournament on Saturday. The Bison went 11-2 in championship round matches and had five players advance to the semifinals.
Max Kane and Daniel Wright each won two matches to advance to the semifinals on opposite sides of the bracket in Flight A. Kane cruised to straight-sets wins over Loyola's Reid Burch and Mount St. Mary's' Austin Blake. Wright had little trouble with Concordia's Alessandro Evangelisti in the first round, but had to outlast Mateo DeSomurcio from Mount St. Mary's 11-9 in the third set of their quarterfinals match. Kane will play Concordia's Jui Mao and Wright will take on Concordia's Lorenzo Montegiorgi in the semifinals on Sunday.
The Bison also have two players on a collision course in the Flight B bracket. Bryan Adams advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Colgate's Noah Rosenblat in the quarterfinals, while Ben Gerber posted a three-set win over Concordia's Ofir Ginat. Adams will play Concordia's Rafa Ferreira, while Gerber, who opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Loyola's Alex Castro, will play Loyola's Blest Jones.
Playing in Flight C, freshman Max McDonald won the first two matches of his career, winning in straight sets over Brandon Wortkotter from Mount St. Mary's and Loyola's Jack Shortell. He will play Colgate's Tom Haile in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, freshman Andrei Vitiuc won his first career match 6-4, 6-1 over Sean McNulty from Mount St. Mary's, but fell in three sets to Colgate's Dean Koman in the quarterfinals.
Wright and Gerber make up the lone doubles team still alive for Bucknell. They topped Loyola's Jordan Kuchta and Burch 8-3 in the quarterfinals and are now set to take on Mao and Ginat (Concordia) in the semifinals.
Play resumes with the women's semifinals singles matches at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The semifinals of the men's singles brackets will follow immediately after that.
