LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team is set to begin the fall portion of its 2015-16 season this weekend as it welcomes Loyola (Md.), Mount St. Mary's, Colgate and Concordia for the Bucknell Quad Tournament. The three-day event begins at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
Senior Nick Bybel was the lone individual champion for the Bison at the season-opening event last year, defeating players from Concordia, a national-level contender in Division II, in the semifinals and finals. The two-time defending Patriot League Player of the Year and recently elected captain of the team will take the first week of the season off before making his debut at the Ivy Plus One event hosted by Princeton on Sept. 18-20.
Sophomore Timber Erskine was the runner-up in Flight C last season, winning his first two matches before falling to Concordia's Ofir Ginat in the finals. Sophomore Ben Gerber advanced to the semifinals of Flight B, where he was defeated by teammate Octavio Canibe.
Gerber and Canibe teamed up for a perfect 3-0 record to win Flight B, clinching the title with an 8-6 win over Loyola's Matthew Bejian and Max Shanbrom. Bybel and Max Kane went 2-1 and finished second in Flight A.
Bucknell played three of the four teams scheduled to play in this weekend's tournament during the spring dual season last year. The Bison defeated Loyola and Mount St. Mary's and split with Colgate. The win over the Raiders came in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament. The fourth team, Concordia, brings a strong international presence to the event. The Clippers' roster last season was made up of seven international players from seven different countries.
