LEWISBURG, Pa. – Head coach Craig Schwartz has announced that senior Nick Bybel will serve as the team captain for the 2015-16 Bucknell men's tennis season. Bybel takes over as the leader of a team made up of just one senior and seven underclassmen.
“Nick has been in the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy since his sophomore year, and I believe that has really helped with advancing his leadership skills,” Schwartz said. “He was great last season as our co-captain with Octavio Canibe in regards to really helping our underclassmen with the transition to being a student-athlete on and off the court at the collegiate level.”
Bybel was named the Patriot League Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after setting a single-season program record with a 38-3 mark last year. Playing at No. 1 singles, he went an amazing 22-1 during the spring season, including a 21-match winning streak to end the season. He posted a 2-0 record at the Patriot League Tournament.
“Having such a special player on the court who totally leads by example and is all about the team aspect and not the individual accolades really makes him an easy choice to be our captain,” Schwartz said. “I believe his overall leadership will prove to be the difference this season with our pursuit for a PL Championship.”
The Bison went 14-9 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League last season, before advancing to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. They open the 2015-16 season this weekend at the Bucknell Quad Tournament.
