CINCINNATI, Ohio – Playing its second consecutive Big East Conference opponent, the Bucknell men's soccer team lost 1-0 to a strong Xavier squad Saturday evening at XU Soccer Complex. In a matchup of two of the top offensive teams in the nation, the game featured just 14 total shots and one corner kick. The lone goal was scored by the Musketeers' Chris Moore just over seven minutes into the second half.
Xavier (5-2-0) entered the match ranked seventh nationally in goals (2.5 per game), while Bucknell (3-3-1) ranked 25th (2.0) and was coming off a 4-0 shutout of Seton Hall.
“This was good preparation for Patriot League play for us,” commented Bison head coach Brendan Nash. “Xavier is a high-quality opponent that was very confident coming off its win over Notre Dame earlier this week.”
Of the seven shots the Bison attempted, just one was on goal as Xavier goalkeeper Dallas Jaye made one save. Bucknell goalie Mike Lansing, the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, stopped three shots.
Bucknell did have a couple strong scoring chances, including one in the final minute when Zack Rockmore served the ball into the box to Justin Galiani who tried to redirect it and just missed the post. In the first half, Jesse Klug and Chris Thorsheim had a chance to team up on a score, but Jaye came out of the goal and intercepted Klug's pass to Thorsheim.
Xavier has been ranked as high as 10th nationally this year and was coming off a win over No. 2 Notre Dame.
The Bison will now be idle until next Sunday, Sept. 27, when it opens Patriot League play at Boston U. Bucknell defeated the Terriers in last year's Patriot League Championship.
