LEWISBURG, Pa. – Emily Hitchings scored two second-half goals to lead the Bucknell field hockey team to a 2-1 win over a red-hot California team on Sunday at Penn State. On Monday, Hitchings was rewarded with a pair of honors. The senior was named the Corvias Patriot League Player of the Week and the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Hitchings helped Bucknell rally from a 1-0 deficit with her two goals. She scored on a deflection in the 46th minute to tie the score, then tallied the game-winner in the 65th minute on a rebound in front of the net. The neutral-site contest was played in University Park, Pennsylvania two days after Cal knocked off No. 14 Penn State in overtime on the Nittany Lions' home turf. The Golden Bears entered the contest with a three-game winning streak.
Prior to Sunday's game, Hitchings had scored just one goal in her collegiate career. The score came during her freshman season. She took just one shot as a sophomore and missed most of last season with an injury. She has stepped in to play a bigger role for the team in her final season.
The Bison will be on the road for a pair of tough matches against ranked teams this weekend. They will play at No. 18 Delaware on Friday and at No. 7 Albany on Sunday. The two opponents are a combined 10-1 on the season.
