MERION STATION, Pa. – Maria Cioffi topped teammate Lisa Jouravleva in the finals to win the Flight 1 title at the Saint Joseph's Invitational on Sunday. The Bucknell women's tennis team has now won a championship in each of the first two tournaments of the season.
Cioffi concluded a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jouravleva. The two players are expected to fill the top two spots in the Bison lineup this season. If their results at Saint Joseph's are any indication, the Bison should expect big things. Both players went 2-0 on Saturday to advance to the finals, combining for three three-set wins.
“I thought everyone played really well and showed a lot of improvement in their match play from last year,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “Maria and Lisa competed at an extraordinary level to dominate the top draw against some outstanding competition. The quality of match play this weekend was impressive.”
The Bison also had success in the consolation brackets of Flight 3 and Flight 4. Melissa Parks notched a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ann Marie Devlin from Saint Joseph's, before falling to Delaware's Sara Komer in the consolation finals. Allie Lane was a straight sets winner over Norfolk State's Ana Popovic, but dropped her consolation finals match to George Washington's Egle Jakuciunaite. In doubles play, Lauren Fishbein and Danielle Gannon came back to win the consolation bracket of Flight 2.
Bucknell returns home to host the Bucknell Invite on Sept. 18-20. It is the second of three home tournaments for the Bison this fall.
