Women?s Soccer Falls At Long Beach State In OT, 1-0

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Fatmata Kamara scored 4:37 into the overtime period to lift Long Beach State to a 1-0 victory over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at George Allen Field.
The Bison (1-2-1) hung in tough against a Long Beach State (3-1) squad that has recieved votes in the national poll following victories this season over Big-12 school Iowa State and nationally ranked UCLA.
“I was really proud of the way the team played today,” said head coach Kelly Kuss. “We held a very strong Long Beach State team scoreless for 95 minutes playing a majority of the second half a player down. The whole group showed a great deal of heart and determination in the game.”
Following 90 minutes of scoreless soccer in regulation, the 49ers were able to find the back of the net on a free kick that was sent to the far post.
Jessica Ratner had a busy day in goal for Bucknell, tallying seven saves. Ratner recorded two of her saves in the first half. Ratner made an impressive stop in the 36th minute, when Mimi Rangel crossed the ball into the box, finding Rocio Rodriguez who went for the header but had the ball saved.
Long Beach State continued to attack in the second half, but the Bison did not let up on the defensive end. The 49ers had an opportunity for a score in the 59th minute off a shot from Jessica Vincent that forced Ratner to make a diving effort for the save.
Long Beach State was the aggressors in the match, outshooting the Bison 18-3. The 49ers also had a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Cora Climo, Talia Szatkowski and Riley Coopersmith each recorded a shot in the contest.
Bucknell wraps up its four-match road trip on Sept. 4 at Mount St. Mary's. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Bison return to Holmes Stadium on Sept. 6 to host St. Francis (Pa.).
