BARCELONA, Spain – The final day of the two-day Barcelona Meet on the Mare Nostrum Series was Thursday and all four Bison swimmers in Spain were scheduled to compete. However, illness struck the Bison as Louis Behnen had to scratch as did Emma Levendoski in the 200-meter backstroke. Julianna Foss (200 back), Chris Devlin (400 IM, 100 back) and Levendoski (50 back) were in action, though.
Devlin, who set a school long-course record in the 200 backstroke when he advanced to the finals on Wednesday, did the same in the 100 back. His time of 58.15 was .72 faster than Tom Brown's standard that had stood since 2011. Devlin placed 24th in the event. He was 20th in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:41.92.
Foss finished 20th in the 200 back in 2:26.67, while Levendoski tied for 21st in the 50 back in 30.90.
The meet concluded a weeklong stay in Spain for the Bison swimmers. Athletes from Japan, South Africa, Denmark, Netherlands, Hungary, Great Britain, China, Norway, Poland, Germany, Russia and Spain competed as did several Olympians and Olympic medalists. The winner of Wednesday's 200 back which Devlin swam was an Olympic silver medalist from Japan.
