WEST POINT, N.Y. – Led by a title in the 4x800 relay, the Bucknell men's track and field team is in second place after the first day of competition at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships. Navy leads the event, which is being held at Army West Point's Shea Stadium.
Navy holds a commanding lead with 89.5 points after the first of two days. Bucknell's 37 points are one more than third-place Army West Point, while Lehigh is fourth with 31.
The Bison had six athletes earn All-Patriot League honors on the day, led by the first-place 4x800 relay team that won with a time of 7:32.67. That time ranks sixth all-time at Bucknell. Jordan Jackson led off the race with a 1:56 and was followed by John Westwood with a 1:54 split. Alex Jagelsky finished the third leg in 1:51, and Andrew Garcia-Garrison anchored the relay with a 1:51 split, helping his team win by less than two-tenths of a second over a team from Army.
Garcia-Garrison is unbeaten in five Patriot League events this season at the indoor and outdoor championships. He was named the Track Athlete of the Meet at the indoor championships after winning four events.
Senior Laddie Trees landed on the All-Patriot League Second Team with a runner-up finish in the javelin. His second attempt was his best throw of the day, going 209-2. Freshman Nicholas Lombardo earned his first All-Patriot League honors with a second-place finish in the long jump. He leapt 22-11 ¾ on his first attempt of the day.
Trees was one of four throwers to score points for Bucknell. Pat Mulrooney was fourth in the javelin, while Brian Monahan and Jack Fellows were seventh and eighth, respectively in the hammer throw.
Five athletes qualified for Saturday's finals in their respective events, led by Christian Lupica with a first-place time in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries. He will be joined in the finals by Grant Reynolds, who qualified third, and Matt Deysher, who took eighth. Vinnie Pini will compete in the finals of the 200-meter dash after taking sixth in the prelims.
Cody Haupt is off to a great start in the decathlon. He sits in second after five events, bolstered by a first-place finish in the shot put and a runner-up showing in the long jump.
