LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior football players Trey Lauletta (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and Derek Maurer (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) received special awards at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held at the Elaine Langone Center on Tuesday.
Lauletta won the Robert A. Latour Service Award, presented to senior athletes “for extraordinary service to Bucknell and local communities.” Maurer was a winner of the Alvin F. Jackson, Jr. Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, presented to senior athletes “for outstanding academic and athletic achievement and future promise as Bucknell alumni.”
In addition to Lauletta and Maurer, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class.
Lauletta was named team MVP as the Bison Gridiron Club Awards Banquet following the conclusion of football season. The quarterback played in six of Bucknell's 11 games and started four of them, including the final three contests. He completed 65 of 114 passes for 1,002 yards and eight touchdowns and combined with fellow quarterback R.J. Nitti to become the first pair of Bison to throw for 1,000 yards in the same season in program history.
One of the highlights of the campaign for Lauletta was his performance in a mid-October win at Lehigh when he threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bison to a 45-24 victory. Lauletta became the first Bucknell quarterback in 20 years to post a 300-yard game and he became just the ninth player in program history to throw four touchdowns in a game.
Off the field, Lauletta majored in managing for sustainability with a minor in economics, posting a 3.84 grade-point average. He was a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll all four years and has been on the Dean's List six times.
Lauletta and Maurer teamed up to co-found the Bison Consulting Group, a student-run consulting firm that connects Bucknell's student body with local community organizations.
A four-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and a seven-time Dean's List member, Maurer was named Capital One Academic All-District in 2014. He was also a member of the FCS ADA All-Academic Team and posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average last fall when he was named a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy.
On the field, Maurer was Bucknell's do-it-all kicker, handing punts, kickoffs, field goals and extra points this past fall. The two-year starting kicker led the Bison in points with 63 to rank third on the program's single-season points by kicking list. He will graduate with 111 career points.
Lauletta and Maurer helped lead the Bison football team to an 8-3 record last fall, its most wins since 1997.
