WORCESTER, Mass. – Bucknell game one starting pitcher Andrew Andreychik recorded the first shutout of the season for the Bison and game two starter Mike Castellani allowed just one run in eight-plus innings of work to lead the Bucknell baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at Holy Cross during which Bucknell outscored the Crusaders 8-1. The Bison claimed game one by a 3-0 score and followed with a 5-1 win in the nightcap to take three of four in the weekend series at Fitton Field.
Defending Patriot League champion Bucknell finished its season at 24-22, 8-12 Patriot League, but the Bison did win their second series of the conference season. Holy Cross (21-24, 12-8 PL) is one of four teams to qualify for next month's Patriot League Tournament.
Andreychik (4-5) got the day started right for Bucknell as he allowed just five hits and struck out four as he logged his fifth career shutout, tying Mathew Wilson's program record. Andreychik, a junior right-hander, retired the first eight hitters he faced and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. He did not allow a leadoff hitter in any inning to reach base.
The Bison offense gave Andreychik all the run support he would need with three runs in the top of the first. Sam Clark, Jon Mayer and Rob Krentzman each registered an RBI single in the frame. Bucknell totaled all four of its hits in the game in the first inning as its only baserunner the rest of the way against Holy Cross starter Justin Finan (3-3) came on a fourth-inning error.
Finan was almost as good as Andreychik as he pitched to the minimum (18) over the final six innings thanks to a fourth-inning double play.
Castellani (4-1) was strong in game two as he scattered seven hits and three walks while holding Holy Cross to just one run with that coming in the third inning. The sophomore lefty pitched into the ninth before giving way to Mike Stephens, who retired three in a row with two runners on base to record his third save of the year.
Bucknell's lineup featured five seniors playing their final game and they combined for five of the team's nine hits. Anthony Gingerelli, who ended the season on an eight-game hitting streak, led the way by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Classmates Krentzman and Jake Archey also had hits.
With Castellani holding the Crusaders to just one run, Bucknell finally got on the board with two runs in the top of the seventh. A one-out double by Gingerelli tied the score, while Krentzman drove home Gingerelli for the go-ahead run with a two-out double.
The Bison added three insurance runs in the eighth with two coming on a double by Gingerelli. Tommy Pennington also had an RBI single in the frame.
Bucknell handed Holy Cross starter Brendan King (3-1) his first loss of the year. He yielded eight hits and all five runs in 7.2 innings.
Joe Ogren walked and scored a run in both ends of the doubleheader as his reached-base streak extended to 19 games.
