Women's Water Polo Opens CWPA Championship with 14-4 Win Over Connecticut College

PRINCETON, N.J. – Colleen Barron scored three goals and four other Bison netted two apiece as the Bucknell women's water polo team opened the CWPA Championship Friday afternoon with a 14-4 victory over Connecticut College. With the win, the seventh-seeded Bison will move on to the quarterfinal round against second-seeded Michigan Friday at 6 p.m.
Bucknell (12-12) dominated the game against the 10th-seeded Camels (18-14). The Bison scored two goals in the game's first five minutes and led 6-2 at halftime. They then scored the first eight goals of the second half to open a game-high 12-goal lead (14-2).
A freshman, Barron's three goals marked the highest total of her career. She now has 14 on the season. Fellow rookies Shyla Lintz and Kendyl Johnson each scored two goals as did the team's leading scorers junior Hannah Sunday and senior Eleanor Marrs.
Bison goalies Haley Derrod (first half) and Manuela Herrera (second half) split time in cage. Derrod posted five saves, while Herrera registered three.
Bucknell, which lost to Michigan by nine goals on Sunday, will try to upset the No. 18 team in the country on Friday evening. Princeton's DeNunzio Pool is the host of the CWPA Championship, which will run through Sunday.
