Men's Tennis Eclipses Last Season's Win Total with Sweep of Hampton

ORLANDO – The Bucknell men's tennis team is just seven matches into the season, but it has already eclipsed last year's win total. The Bison improved to 4-3 with a 7-0 win over Hampton on Monday in the first of five matches scheduled in Orlando.
Junior Nick Bybel ran both his singles and doubles winning streaks to five consecutive matches. Bybel, who is ranked ninth in the Atlantic Region, posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Luke Thompson at No. 1 singles, and teamed with Bryan Adams for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Bybel improved to 6-1 this spring and moved into a tie for third in program history with 70 wins in singles He also took over the sixth spot with his 119th combined victory.
The match was already in hand for the Bison, but Adams secured the sweep with a down-to-the-wire contest at No. 2 singles, outlasting Peter Odegbami 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. Maxwell Kane also went three sets to pick up the win at No. 5, edging Fedor Shirin 6-2, 4-6, 10-2.
Daniel Wright (No.3), Octavio Canibe (No. 4) and Ben Gerber (No. 6) rounded out the individual winners for the Bison. Wright upped his record to 6-1 while playing at No. 3 for the first time, Gerber improved to 4-2, and Canibe notched his second win of the season.
Kane and Gerber won by the slightest of margin at No. 3 doubles, prevailing 8-7 with a victory in the tiebreak. Wright and Canibe were 8-2 winners at No. 2
“It's great to come down south and win our first match,” said Bucknell head coach Craig Schwartz. “We came out ready to go in doubles and carried that momentum right into singles. This was a solid team effort across the board. I look forward to seeing how the guys respond to an early morning match tomorrow.”
The Bison are scheduled to play Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday at 9 a.m. The match will be played at Rollins College.
