BOSTON – Freshman Nicholas Lombardo placed third in the long jump and Bucknell qualified for the finals in five events on the second day of the IC4A Championships at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.
Lombardo earned All-East accolades with his third-place finish in the long jump, leaping 22-9 ¼ on his sixth and final jump. Northeastern's Kyle Darrow won the event with a mark of 24-8 ½, while Aklesso Agama of Liberty edged Lombardo for second place with a jump of 22-10.
Christian Lupica was one of five Bison to qualify for the finals in individual events. He advanced past the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.03 and ran it in 8.09 to qualify third out of the semifinal heat. Grant Reynolds advanced to the semifinals and finished 12th in 8.27 seconds.
Anthony Menza ran the third-fastest time in Bucknell history while qualifying for the finals in the 500-meter dash. He is fifth after the preliminary heat, and his time of 1:03.69 is the fastest non-converted time in program history.
Bucknell had two runners advance to the finals in the 1,000-meter run. Andrew Garcia-Garrison crossed the line first in 2:24.99. He will be joined in the nine-runner finals by John Westwood, who had the second-fastest time (2:25.59).
Kevin Tapper will compete in the finals of the 400-meter dash on Sunday after taking sixth in 48.10 on Saturday. Also competing in the finals will be the 4x800 relay of Jordan Jackson, Alex Jagelsky, David Frering and Louis Tobias after taking seventh in the preliminaries.
“Our men had a very good first day,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “I'm very pleased to have Menza, Tapper, Lupica, Garcia-Garrison and Westwood in the final of their individual events. Jagelsky did a good job on the anchor of the 4x800 to get us into the final after running a tough 800 for him earlier in the day. Lombardo finishing third in the long jump is huge. He has a great career ahead of him.”
Competition resumes with the triple jump on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
