LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's track and field took second place at the eight-team Monmouth Season Opener on Saturday. The Bison won five events and finished with 72 ¾ points, while the host Hawks won with 111 ½ points.
Jack Fellows, Michael McGowan, Kevin Tapper and Laddie Trees all won individual titles for Bucknell, which also added a victory in the 4x100 relay.
“It was a nice rust buster for us, and I felt that our athletes showed great character handling the cold and windy elements,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “We were not too concerned with times or distances, but were more concerned with placing high and beating people. The times and distances will come as the season progresses.”
Fellows had two top-three finishes on the day, winning the discus with a throw of 157-11 and taking third in the shot put with a heave of 51-8 ¼. He was joined in the discus by Monahan with a fourth-place finish and in the shot put by Joseph Breen and Monahan, who were fourth and fifth, respectively. Monahan added a third-place showing in the hammer throw, where he was joined by Olu Shoyoye in fifth.
Michael McGowan led a great effort by the Bison in the 1,500-meter run. McGowan topped a field of 98 runners with a time of 3:59.71, while Alex Jagelsky finished second in 4:00.47.
Tapper's victory came in the long jump, where he bested a field of 20 with a leap of 21-2 ¾. Also competing in the event was Cody Haupt, who took fifth. Tapper added a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.09. Anthony Menza was fourth in 50.52.
Laddie Trees is off to a great start to his senior season. With the javelin not being competed during the indoor season, Trees was making his season debut and topped 22 throwers for the title. His winning throw went a distance of 200-03. Pat Mulrooney took fifth in the event.
Glen Williams was the fastest collegiate runner in the 5,000-meter run. He took second overall with a time of 15:09.54.
Daniel Gevirtz had a solid day with two top-five finishes. He took fourth in the 200-meter dash, where he was followed by teammate Vincent Pini in fifth, and was fifth in the 100-meter dash.
Taking third for Bucknell were Grant Reynolds (100H), John Westwood (3,000) and Nicholas Lombardo (triple jump). Matt Deysher and Reynolds took fourth and fifth, respectively in the 400-meter hurdles, and Maxwell Prizant was fifth in the pole vault.
Bucknell will have numerous athletes compete at Susquehanna's Jim Taylor Invitational on Sunday. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to the weather.
