Men's Tennis Beats St. Cloud State, Falls to Southern Mississippi on Wednesday

ORLANDO, Fla. – Bucknell men's tennis moved to 5-5 overall after splitting a pair of matches on Wednesday. The Bison fell 6-1 to Southern Mississippi in the first match of the day, but bounced back with an 8-1 win over St. Cloud State.
Junior Nick Bybel was 2-0 on the day, starting with the Bison's only win in the loss to Southern Mississippi, a team that is 11-4 and recently beat No. 77 Arizona. Bybel was a 7-6 (4), 6-3 winner over the Golden Eagles' Tarun Surat at No. 1 singles.
Bybel upped his winning streak to eight matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win over St. Cloud State's Marcelo Locatelli. He improved to 73-21 in singles play during his career and moved into second in team history in singles wins. He needs just four more to pass Ira Reibeisen (2004-08) for the program record.
The match was played under Division II scoring rules, so the Bison earned three points with their sweep in doubles. Bybel was joined by Bryan Adams for the win at No. 1, Daniel Wright and Octavio Canibe teamed up for the victory at No. 2, and Maxwell Kane and William Szamosszegi were winners at No. 3.
Wright (No. 3), Canibe (No. 4), Kane (No. 5) and Szamosszegi (No. 6) all won in straight sets in singles action. Canibe clinched the match, rolling past Joao Vito Souto 6-1, 6-0. The Bison won 60 games and lost just 12 in their five singles victories.
“It's been great to play outside and in warmer weather this week,” Bybel said. “We are 2-2 this week and everyone's level has increased in each match. It's been great to see the freshmen step up, and you can see they've grown both physically and mentally. No matter the result of tomorrow's match, everyone will be carrying momentum back to Bucknell for the Patriot League season.”
The Bison conclude their Florida trip with a match against Creighton (10-2) on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
