LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's water polo team wrapped up its season-opening 10-game homestand Sunday with losses to league foes Harvard and Brown. The Bison dropped their 9 a.m. contest against the Crimson by a 12-5 margin and then came back a few hours later and fell by a 6-4 score to the Bears. Bucknell finished the weekend with a 1-3 record and is now 6-4, 1-4 CWPA on the year.
The Bison opened their season two weeks ago with a home invitational and have played all 10 of their games at Kinney Natatorium.
Among the highlights of the day were senior Taylor Barnett scoring her 100th career goals, Hannah Sunday extending her consecutive games with a goal streak to 10, freshman Colleen Barron totaling a team-high three points (1g, 2a) against Harvard and rookie goalie Manuela Herrera earning two starts and posting 16 total saves.
The nightcap against Brown (5-3) was the closer of the two affairs and the Bison had a chance to win the low-scoring contest. Bucknell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and still had a one-goal advantage after a Sunday fast break score less than 90 seconds into the second half. However, that was the final goal for the Bison as the Brown defense kept them scoreless for the final 14-plus minutes. The Bears scored three goals during that stretch.
Bucknell was still in position to at least force overtime when Sunday drew a fifth ejection of the game with 1:07 to play and the deficit at 6-4. Bison head coach John McBride immediately called timeout and drew up a play, but Bucknell's offense was unable to convert.
The Bison struggled in six-on-five situations all game, converting just once in 11 tries.
Sunday led Bucknell with two goals in its lowest-scoring contest of the season. Barnett and Kendyl Johnson added one apiece.
Harvard (7-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening three minutes of the day's first game and Bucknell was never able to cut its deficit to less than two goals. A six-on-five goal by Tegan Stanbach midway through the second quarter made it 5-3, but the Crimson scored the next five goals and held the Bison scoreless for 11:20.
Stanbach, Barron, Sunday, Martine McCarthy and Eleanor Marrs scored the goals for Bucknell. Marrs played sparingly in the first half due to being whistled for two early ejections.
The Bison will now be idle until next week's spring break trip to California. The eight-game trip begins next Tuesday, March 10, with a 6 p.m. (Eastern) contest at Cal Baptist.
