HEMPSTEAD, N.Y – It only took the Bucknell men's tennis team four matches to equal last season's win total as the Bison improved to 3-1 this season with a 5-2 win at Hofstra on Sunday. The win wrapped up a three-match road swing over a span of two days that saw head coach Craig Schwartz's team add two victories to its resume.
“Today's match really tested our will to win and we responded in a big way,” Schwartz said. “We might not have had our best stuff but we showed we are willing to compete no matter what. This weekend was a really important step in the right direction toward achieving our overall goal. I look forward to working hard this week at practice and turning our weaknesses into strengths.”
Freshman Ben Gerber has helped spark the Bucknell turnaround this season with a great start to his college career. He improved to 3-0 this spring with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Leonardo Pires at No. 5 singles. Gerber is a perfect 7-0 in dual matches as he and freshman Maxwell Kane upped their record to 4-0 with a 6-4 verdict at No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Daniel Wright clinched the match for Bucknell with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot. Nick Bybel was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 1, and Kane swept his match with Stuart MacLeod in the sixth spot, 6-0, 6-0.
The Bison got off to a hot start by sweeping the three doubles matches. The Gerber and Kane team was joined with wins by Bybel and Adams at No. 1 and Octavio Canibe and Wright at No. 2
Bucknell will travel for its fifth straight match away from home when it plays at Saint Peter's on Sunday at 2 p.m.
