NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior Andrew Garcia-Garrison didn't quite reach his goal of running a sub-four minute mile Saturday at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational, but he didn't show any signs of being worn down either despite running the event for the third time in eight days.
Garcia-Garrison set the program record in the event a week ago, just one day after running the mile leg of the distance medley relay team that also set a school record. On Saturday at Notre Dame, he finished fifth out of 66 with a time of 4:02.56, just slightly off his record-setting time.
“The rabbit did not set a quick enough pace to break a four-minute mile, and we could tell the group slowed down on the second lap,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “I thought Andrew ran an incredible race and put himself in great position to win with 400 meters to go. He was able to beat some All-Americans in the race.”
The Bison received an outstanding showing from its two athletes in the shot put, as seniors Jack Fellows and Brian Monahan both had throws worthy of the program's top-10 list. Fellows led the two with a mark of 54-2, while Monahan 's top heave was 53-9 ¾.
Bucknell added four new IC4A qualifiers on the day, including three in the 800m. Senior Alex Jagelsky took seventh out of 62 with the third-best time in program history (1:50.85), while junior John Westwood and sophomore Louis Tobias qualified with times of 1:53.64 and 1:54.43, respectively.
Kevin Tapper also qualified for IC4A, taking 18th out of 66 in the 400m with a time of 48.12. He was already fourth all-time at Bucknell in the event and improved on that time.
Tapper joined Anthony Menza, Jacob Ashkettle and Christian Lupica on the 4x400 that ran the eighth-fastest time in school history (3:17.08). Lupica also finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 7.94.
Breen Cracks Program's Top-10 List at Youngstown State
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The two Bucknell throwers at Notre Dame weren't the only Bison athletes to crack the program's top-10 list in the shot put on Saturday. Sophomore Joseph Breen did the same on his way to a second-place finish at the Youngstown State National Invite.
Competing in a field of 35 throwers, Breen's runner-up finish came with a toss of 53-11 ¼. Oakland's Gino Vitella won the event with a throw of 54-6 ¾.
Freshman Nicholas Lombardo put the finishing touches on a great weekend in Ohio, taking second out of 14 in the high jump after clearing 6-4 ¾. He won the long jump on Friday night. Sophomore Elijah Kay also cleared 6-4 ¾ and took third.
Other top-five finishers for the Bison at Youngstown State were Maxwell Prizant, who took fourth in the pole vault, and Jordan Jackson, who was fifth in the 800m.
Comment from head coach Kevin Donner about both events
“We were very hot and cold at both places on Friday evening. It seemed like some of our kids were on fire and others really struggled. Saturday was a great day at both Notre Dame and Youngstown. I believe we settled down after the long trips and had a lot more confidence as a group. It looks like our league lineup is beginning to solidify and both teams seem ready for leagues.”
