Bucknell Football Announces Recruiting Class
2/4/2015 4:59:00 PM | Football
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell head football coach Joe Susan on Wednesday's National Signing Day announced that 22 student-athletes representing five states and 11 position groups will be joining the Bison for the 2015 season. The class is heavily populated with players from the Northeast as 16 members hail from New Jersey or Pennsylvania.
“We feel strongly about the student-athletes who have decided to join our university and football program,” commented Susan. “The signing date is a culmination of a lot of hard work accomplished by our signees, their families, their coaches and the efforts of our coaching staff. It also marks the start of the next positive step in their lives.”
New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the most represented home states in the group as eight players are from each. The class also includes players from Florida (3), Maryland (2) and Virginia (1).
The projected positions most common among the class are wide receiver, offensive line, safety and cornerback, which have three recruits each.
“We are fortunate to have attracted some of the best and brightest in this class,” noted Susan. “This group fills certain specific positional needs with their talents as football players. They equal that with their dedication to academic achievement. More importantly, they are the right people for Bucknell. They will benefit by their experience on our campus. We will challenge them to benefit Bucknell by their presence here.
“It is great to make signing this class official. The student-athletes we signed will help our team in our continual effort to achieve excellence in all that we do.
In February 2012, the Patriot League approved a policy allowing athletic merit aid in the sport of football and this class represents Bucknell's third with the ability to attract student-athletes with those merit aid scholarships. Bucknell and the other six football-playing members of the Patriot League are permitted to award up to the equivalent of 15 athletic financial aid awards each year. The total amount of all countable financial aid awarded to football student-athletes may not exceed 60 equivalencies in any given year.
Bucknell is coming off one of its best seasons in recent memory as it posted an 8-3 overall mark and finished second in the Patriot League with a 4-2 record. It marked just the fifth time in program history the Bison have reached eight wins in a season and it was the first time they have finished in sole possession of second place since 1997. Bucknell has now finished above .500 in three of the last four years.
