PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sophomore Louis Behnen broke the Bucknell record in the 200-yard freestyle and six different Bison scored points in individual events on the second day of the ECAC Championships Saturday at Pittsburgh's Trees Pool. Bucknell stands in eighth place out of 15 scoring teams with one day remaining in the three-day meet.
Behnen's performance in the 200 free highlighted the day for the Bison. The All-Patriot League selection entered the day ranked third in program history in the 200 free, but his time in the finals of 1:37.99 pushed him ahead of Matthew Segar's four-year-old standard of 1:38.13. Behnen touched the wall third in the race, three spots better than his finish in the morning prelims.
The 200 free is Behnen's first school record, although he does rank second in school history in the 500 free, 1,000 free and 1,650 free.
Patriot League Rookie of the Meet Chris Devlin (8th) and Kyle Bloom (16th) scored in the 200 free alongside Behnen. Devlin's prelim time of 1:39.39 placed him seventh on the program's all-time list.
Bucknell had one scorer in each of the other four individual swimming events contested on Saturday. Colin Lynch was a two-time scorer, finishing fifth in the 100 back and 14th in the 100 fly, while Ben Seketa (11th) scored in the 100 breast and Sean Lyons (15th) did in the 400 IM. Lynch's prelim time of 49.80 in the 100 back ranks third in Bucknell history.
The Bison 800 free relay of Sam Rutan, Devlin, Stephen Hollinshead and Behnen had a strong night as well, finishing second in their race. Their time of 6:38.13 ranks second in program history behind only last week's quartet at the Patriot League Championships. Rutan's 200 free split (1:40.24) on the leadoff leg places him eighth in school history.
The 200 medley relay also added to Bucknell's point total with an eighth-place showing in the first race of the evening finals session.
The ECAC Championships will wrap up on Sunday. Prelims are scheduled for 9 a.m. Finals are slated for 4 p.m. with the last event concluding approximately 7:15 p.m.
