PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Bucknell freshman Chris Devlin was named Rookie of the Meet at last week's Patriot League Championships and on the first day of the ECAC Championships Friday at Pittsburgh's Trees Pool he continued his strong postseason. Devlin had the top performance by a Bison with a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in the No. 2 time in school history.
Devlin last week broke school records in three events (100 back, 200 back, 400 IM) and he nearly added another in the 200 IM on Friday. Devlin finished third in the prelims in a time of 1:50.29, good for third in the school record book. He then bettered that in the finals, touching the wall in 1:49.15. Only Mike Nicholson (1:48.16) has gone faster in the event.
Only three other Bison scored points in individual events on Friday. Brian Phillips was 13th in the 500 free, while JT Nangle (14th) and Steve Grune (16th) made the finals of the 50 free.
Nangle, Kyle Bloom, Stephen Hollinshead and Grune combined for a seventh-place showing in the 200 free relay. The Bison 400 medley relay was disqualified due to an early takeoff.
Bucknell is in ninth place in the team standings after the first day of three. Fellow Patriot League member Navy is in first place, while Army is in fourth. Host Pittsburgh is in seventh.
The ECAC Championships will continue Saturday. Trials begin at 10 a.m. and the finals are slated for 6 p.m. The 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay, as well as women's three-meter diving, are on the schedule.
