LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's water polo team continues a season-opening 10-game homestand this weekend when it welcomes six fellow CWPA teams and Gannon to Kinney Natatorium. A total of 14 games will be contested over the two days with the Bison playing four times.
Bucknell (5-1, 0-1 CWPA) kicks off the weekend with a 10:20 a.m. game against No. 11 Princeton on Saturday. The Bison then face George Washington at 5 p.m. The next day Bucknell takes on Harvard (9 a.m.) and Brown (1 p.m.) in a pair of contests that will have live video broadcasts on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
By the end of this weekend, Bucknell will have played five of its nine conference games. The Bison will play the remainder on back-to-back weekends in April.
Bucknell opened its season two weeks ago with six games at home. The Bison beat Notre Dame College, George Washington, Siena, VMI and St. Francis Brooklyn. Their lone loss was to nationally ranked Hartwick. Bucknell's 5-1 record marks its best start to a season since opening 2008 with a 6-0 mark.
Hannah Sunday, who captured the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week and CWPA Player of the Week awards following the season-opening weekend, has scored a team-high 19 goals this year. Included in that offensive output was a program-record-tying seven goals against VMI. The junior co-captain has also drawn a team-high 22 ejections.
Junior Eleanor Marrs has 16 goals and 13 assists and her 29 points lead the team. The left-hander is nearly halfway to her total of 63 points in all of 2014.
Goalies Haley Derrod and Manuela Herrera split time in cage the opening weekend with each receiving three starts. Herrera posted 27 saves, while Derrod totaled 22.
Bucknell will next be in action March 10 on the beginning of its eight-game spring break trip to California. The Bison will play at Cal Baptist that day.
