LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Louis Behnen earned his second consecutive First Team All-Patriot League honor and four other members of the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team also earned All-Patriot League awards, the league office announced Wednesday. Rookie of the Meet Chris Devlin joined Behnen on the First Team, while senior diver Jon Jones, freshman Colin Lynch and sophomore Jack Robinson were on the Second Team.
Twelve-time champion Navy had nine first-team picks and led the way with 16 all-league honorees. Bucknell's five citations ranked fourth in the league behind the Mids, Army (7) and Boston U. (6).
Each of the All-Patriot League teams is comprised of 19 student-athletes. First-team status is automatically awarded to competitors who earn a first-place finish at the championship meet. The remaining first-team slots are filled by student-athletes with the highest remaining individual point totals from the meet. Second-team status is automatically given to all second-place finishers who do not otherwise have enough points to move up to the first team. The remaining second-team slots are the filled by competitors with the highest remaining point totals.
Behnen scored 49 points at the Patriot League Championships behind the strength of two runner-up finishes and a fourth-place finish in the 500 free. The Oct. 20 Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week, Behnen finished second in the 400 IM and matched that in the 1,650 free on the final day of the four-day meet. It was the second straight year Behnen has recorded top-five finishes in the 400 IM, 500 free and 1,650 free at the Patriot League Championships.
At the Patriot League Championships, Behnen was also part of two relays that set program top-10 marks, including the 800 free relay that broke the one-year-old school record.
Behnen ranks second in Bucknell history in the 500 free, 1,000 free and 1,650 free. The Overland Park, Kansas, native is third in the 200 free and 400 IM, and fifth in the 200 back.
Devlin became Bucknell's first Rookie of the Meet at the Patriot League Championships since Luke Trafton in 2007. The freshman matched Behnen with three top-five finishes and was the top Bison point scorer with 51 points, which ranked sixth in the league.
Devlin broke three school records at the Patriot League Championships. He bettered his own 200 back standard by nearly 2.5 seconds on his way to a second-place showing in the event. He also broke the five-year-old 100 back record and finished fifth in that event, while his winning time of 3:51.13 in the 400 IM broke four-time First Team All-Patriot League selection Mike Nicholson's record. Devlin became the first Bison outside of Nicholson to win a Patriot League gold medal since 2010.
Devlin also swam as part of four relays that posted top-10 times at the Patriot League Championships. He joined Behnen on the record-setting 800 free relay, swimming the anchor leg
Jones became the first Bison diver to earn All-Patriot League honors since David Magaro in 2010. The senior finished third off the three-meter board and fourth off the one-meter board at the Patriot League Championships. Both finishes were career-best showings. In fact, Jones improved his placing off both boards every year of his career and finished his Patriot League tenure as an eight-time scorer in diving events.
Jones scored a career-best 271.15 off the one-meter board and currently ranks fourth in program history off both boards.
Lynch had a strong first Patriot League Championships, scoring in three events. He was eighth in the 200 IM, eighth in the 100 back and ninth in the 200 back and his 31 points scored placed him in a tie for 28th in the league. The freshman posted the No. 4 time in program history in both backstroke events and the No. 5 mark in the 200 IM.
Robinson earned his first All-Patriot League honor thanks to his second straight year scoring in three events in the Patriot League Championships. The sophomore placed seventh in the 400 IM, eighth in the 200 back and 11th in the 500 free.
Robinson posted the No. 2 time in school history in the 200 back and the No. 8 time in the 500 free. He also ranks in the top 10 in the 200 free, 100 back, 200 IM and 400 IM.
Bucknell's All-Patriot League selections helped the Bison to a fourth-place finish at the Patriot League Championships, which were held at Kinney Natatorium for the seventh time.
While the Patriot League Championships are now complete, the season does not end for Bucknell. A number of Bison student-athletes will be competing at this weekend's ECAC Championships, which take place at Pittsburgh. The event starts Friday and continues through Sunday.
